An edible printer is a specialised inkjet printer used with food-safe edible ink and edible paper to print images that can be placed on cakes and other desserts. Edible printers print onto materials such as icing sheets, wafer paper, and chocolate transfer sheets to create edible cake toppers, photos, logos, and decorations.

How does an edible printer work? 

Edible printers use exactly the same technology as regular office inkjet printers, but uses food-safe edible ink and edible papers such as icing sheets, wafer paper or chocolate transfer sheets. Simply choose your design, load your edible paper and send to the printer to print directly onto your edible sheet! The Canon TS705a Edible Printer can connect to your computer, tablet or smartphone via WiFi, meaning you can print anywhere!

Do I need a special edible printer or edible inks for printing chocolate?

No, all EPS edible printers and inks are compatible with chocolate transfer sheets as well as icing sheets and wafer paper. There is no need for any special ink when printing chocolate transfers, simply print with your chosen deisgn and once dried, pour over melted chcoolate and leave to set to transfer the image.

The only difference when using your edible printer for chocolate is making sure to print your image in reverse, as once transferred it will show the right way round.

What is the best printer for edible images on chocolate?

Can I just use edible inks in my normal printer?

No, you should never use a normal office printer which has previously been used with regular non-edible ink. Even with cleaning, residual ink can remain in the print head which could be harmful for health, so only brand new printers which have never been used are suitable for use with edible inks and papers to ensure food-safety.

Which cartridges should I choose for my edible printer - pre-filled or refillable?

All EPS edible printer kits come with a choice of refillable edible ink cartridges or pre-filled edible ink cartridges. Our refillable option comes with a full set of edible inks and filling syringes and needles for set-up and refilling once empty. The pre-filled cartridges come ready to insert and use in your edible printer. Once empty, pre-filled cartridges will need to be replaced. If you choose the pre-filled option to begin with, you can always switch to refillable cartridges further down the line!

If you’re new to edible printing, the easiest way to get started is with pre-filled edible ink cartridges. They are perfect for beginners and occasional bakers who want vibrant, photo-quality results straight away.

Once you feel confident and plan to print regularly, you might consider refillable edible ink cartridges. These allow you to top up individual colours, save money on ink over time, and print more frequently without constantly buying new cartridges.

Do I need a specific software for designing edible images and printing with an Edible Printer?

No. The only software required to connect and run your edible printer is the Canon driver and software package - full instructions on how to set these up are included in the box. For designing your images to print, there is no specific software required. You can print from any programme you are familiar with, our voice would be Canva for the largest range of easy-to-use editing settings and tools.
